When should you order windows for a house build?
Windows should be planned earlier than many first-time home builders expect. Waiting until the walls are finished can push the closed shell stage back by several weeks.
Start quotes before the shell is finished
Ask for first quotes once you have final drawings or a window schedule. This gives you time to compare PVC, aluminium, timber, warm installation, shutters and glazing options without deadline pressure.
For a typical house, keep an 8-12 week buffer before the planned installation date. Large sliding doors, aluminium systems and custom colours often need more time.
Do the final measurement at the right time
The final measurement should happen after openings are built and floor levels are clear. The supplier needs the real opening size, installation method and space for sills, shutters or external blinds.
Ordering only from drawings is risky while masonry work is still active. Small dimensional changes are common and can create expensive corrections.
Connect windows with the full schedule
Windows usually come before internal services, plastering and screeds. Closing the building makes material storage safer and lets later trades work with fewer weather risks.
In BuildIQ, track quote, measurement, order, production, installation and acceptance as separate tasks so one delayed delivery does not surprise the whole build.
