A good product cannot perform if its control layer stops at a connection.
For example, a window can sit square in a rough opening while flashing, drainage, air sealing and insulation at the perimeter remain discontinuous. The installed unit is then not yet a functioning envelope detail. A pipe or cable penetration likewise needs to respect the surrounding control layers, not merely fill a gap.
Effect on HVAC and comfort
Air leakage and thermal bridges affect perceived comfort and the work required of HVAC. Mechanical systems do not repair a broken envelope; they serve a home whose control layers work as designed. Before rough-ins, the team should understand penetrations, access and which layers cannot be casually interrupted.
